As an Editorial Director, you will lead, develop and mentor the Editorial department, which encompasses medical editors and editorial assistants. You will also maintain SOPs and best practices across the team. This position oversees the editing responsibilities for jobs on assigned accounts/projects and ensures that communication materials are of the highest quality regarding content, organization, clarity, accuracy, format, style and consistency. The Editorial Director is skilled in and has experience with all aspects of editing, including copyediting, substantive editing, data verification, proofreading, style and layout review.

Essential Functions:

Editorial Department:

  • Plan workload, forecast and manage resource planning for editorial work, and proactively highlight resource gaps and recommend solutions
  • Strengthen and maintain the editorial process; implement SOPs and ensure adherence to flawless standards of quality
  • Foster professional development with editorial team members through regular 1:1 meetings and provide clear objectives that are formally reviewed at least twice in a year
  • Identify training needs that support skills development
  • Work with the editorial team members to ensure maintenance of house style and consistency of editorial and scientific accuracy
  • Meet with Scientific and Client Services teams as needed to discuss partnership and collaboration efforts and determine areas for improvement
  • Create synergies to share resources, training, and best practices (SOPs) across teams on editorial functions

Industry Awareness:

  • Maintain an exceptional understanding of major style guides and our clients’ brand specific style guides
  • Keep updated on new developments within the medical education industry

Qualifications Include:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in English, journalism, or a science-related field
  • At least 5-7 years of experience working in a healthcare communications agency or in a full-time medical editing position
  • At least 2-3 years of experience managing a team
  • Must have editing experience with various applications, including EndNote and InDesign, as well as other publication/reference databases
  • Ability to prioritize editorial department’s workloads and work under pressure
  • Understanding and familiarity of most current AMA style
  • Strong grasp of grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Meticulous eye for detail, both in language and visual presentation of projects
  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines
  • Team or project management experience
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Collaborator with a detail-oriented work ethic
  • BELS certified preferred

Work Conditions:

  • Full-time
  • Currently remote; must have home office arrangements conducive for virtual meetings
